As part of my ongoing 'Caryatis' project, focused on capturing the beauty of traditional female costumes in Greece, I recently embarked on a remarkable journey to the captivating island of Kastellorizo. That was during a trip to six islands in the Dodecanese, in collaboration with Blue Star Ferries. Nestled in the southeastern Aegean Sea, this island is a hidden gem that holds within it a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural splendour.
The local costumes of Kastellorizo
During my visit to Kastellorizo, I had the privilege of photographing local women adorned in exquisite traditional costumes that embody the island's unique heritage. The first set of photographs featured a single woman, gracefully showcasing the traditional attire. We ventured inside a local traditional house, a magnificent mansion by the island's standards, steeped in aristocratic charm. Within the living room, adorned with ornate decorations, the woman sat elegantly on the traditional sofa, emanating the grace of a bygone era. We also captured a photograph of her in the hallway, with its intricately carved details adding to the allure of the scene.
Stepping outside, we embraced the island's scenic beauty as the backdrop for our next series of photographs. Against the mesmerizing views of the sea and the bustling port of Kastellorizo, the woman in her traditional costume became a living embodiment of the island's rich cultural heritage.
The following day brought new subjects to photograph, including a teenage woman, two young girls and a boy, all adorned in the beautiful traditional costumes of Kastellorizo. We were graciously welcomed into the home of a local fisherman, where the atmosphere exuded a sense of authenticity. This traditional house, filled with fishing equipment and adorned with the Greek flag, served as a backdrop for capturing the essence of everyday life on the island. Within the main large room of the house, surrounded by the captivating clutter of the fisherman's trade, the women and girls became living symbols of Kastellorizo's vibrant traditions.
Once again, we ventured outdoors to embrace the island's natural beauty. With the sea and the port of Kastellorizo framing the scenes, the women and girls wearing their traditional costumes added a touch of enchantment to the already picturesque landscape.
These photographs, presented in this blog post, encapsulate the essence of Kastellorizo's traditional costumes and the unique charm they bring to life. Each image is a testament to the island's rich heritage and serves as a visual homage to the women who proudly carry on the traditions of their ancestors.
